Rough Draft Illustrator- Logo

rough-draft-Kyler-LemonsI created this logo of a Lemon, with a triangle on top using the gradient tool of blue and yellow to try and create a raindrop look. As you can see the gradient transitions from a blue to represent the water to yellow to go into the lemon. It is a representation of “LemonDrop” a droplet, within it a lemon was what I was going for.  My artist name is LemonDrop so I think it fits pretty accurate.  First I created an oval shape, almost an egg, then filled it with yellow. Next, I drew the stem and a leaf, on top of the oval and filled both of them in green. After that, I added a triangle, scaled it to the oval and centered it. In the end, I took the stem/leaf, triangle and pushed them to the back layers. I attempted to add effect to try and make the lemon look a bit more realistic but failed indefinitely. I did not use and outside sources, everything was from Illustrator. I may think about finding a source for the lemon, to get that more realistic appeal.  This was actually my second attempt at the draft, so I did have a rough-rough draft. This rough-rough draft I attempted to do the same logo as you see above, but I was trying to erase the edges of the oval, in an attempt to form the drop part. Opening the file on Friday, I instantly knew that I had to start over. So this time around I includes the triangle and placed it in the back of all the layers. The problem was the eraser, I was using the tool incorrectly, I was trying to erase the lines of the oval and almost sculpt out the droplet.

  1. I really like your logo, and I can tell you put a lot of time into creating it. One suggestion I have is maybe make the whole lemon a gradient from blue to yellow. It seemed a little abrupt with the gradient triangle on top and then a giant neon yellow oval, so I think that maybe making the whole thing gradient would still portray the same message but make the it slightly smoother. You could also make the outside of the lemon a different color rather than the black stroke because it is a little harsh you could maybe do a light green or something because when lemons are ripening they normalizing have some green on them. I really like the lemon stem! It looks so accurate and I can tell it took a lot of time and detail to change the shapes to get it to look so accurate. Overall, good job and I know the final product will look great!

  2. I agree with Jillian the gradient on the lemon and the triangle would smooth it out. I didn’t think of that, I kept trying to add textures to the lemon to do something cause I agreed its a bit abrupt. I’ve thought of removing the stroke altogether, but ill try the key lime look as well. I like the stem and the leaf too but I’m thinking of adding a little line in the middle for the midrib.

  3. The design shapes for this logo were very clean and I think the gradient of color is very strong at conveying your message. The use of color for symbolism for a lemon drop was a great detail to add. However, I think you should soften up the lines around the lemon oval because it is a little contradicting with the light gradient of color. I know you mentioned changing this for your final design, so I am essentially agreeing with this edit in your logo. If it’s possible, you should also focus on adding some more detail or texture in the oval. You could potentially use the gradient for the whole oval, so the whole drop is in a gradient color. This could help add to the detail, while also keeping it very simple for scalability. Overall, great first design, I think you have a variety of options for creating a final.
